Um, how did your conference call go earlier? Ian Oliver (01:44):

Uh, it was very successful, actually. Oh, good. Yeah. Very good. Okay. Yep. Jessica Denson (01:48):

Yeah. Um, so let's, let's start at the beginning. Uh, Globima, uh, talk about what your, the company does and, um, kind of what your footprint is. Ian Oliver (01:57):

So Globima is, uh, based in Poland, grew up in, in Poland and started 34 years ago, early '90s. Our, uh, focus is on what in the telecommunications world is called the network model. So it's what's out in the street and what is connected to what, which really means how does the telecommunication service travel from the starting point to the customer and back? What, what's the physical route? What pieces of equipment does it go through? How is it all connected? And, um, given the complexity of modern networks at the physical level, that's something that's really important to keep track of. Yeah, Jessica Denson (02:35):

It's pretty important. Ian Oliver (02:37):

Yes. Yeah. Yeah. When, when the cement truck takes out the line of telephone poles- Yeah. ... you need to know what's gonna get, get affected by that. Mm-hmm. And if you don't have a digital record of the network, which is something that our software platforms help operators do, then, um, you're gonna have trouble restoring your network. Jessica Denson (02:57):

So, uh, you guys c- you, you create a digital record of, of all the physical- Ian Oliver (03:03):

Yep. Jessica Denson (03:04):

... side of things. Uh, do you also do that, do you help them with build outs when it comes to that? Ian Oliver (03:09):

Um, no, but the information in the sys- so we're not a services company in the sense of designing and building the network itself. Uh-huh. We do provide services in terms of gathering all of the existing data, which can range from the notes written on the cigarette package in pencil on the hood of the pickup truck- Jessica Denson (03:29):

Uh-huh. Ian Oliver (03:30):

... up to and including, you know, several different databases of information, gathering all of those different, uh, sources of data and cleansing them and putting them, them together in one clean database that as close as humanly possible reflects what's actually out in the field. Jessica Denson (03:50):

Got it. Y- you say that about the, uh, the, uh, notes written on the Ian Oliver (03:54):

Car because you've had that experience, I take it. <laugh> Ian Oliver (03:57):

Yeah. Well, if, if, if they're not on a cigarette pack, then they are on the drawings, but the drawings have been rolled up under the seat of the pickup truck for six months. <laugh> Right. It's, I mean, it's an old joke, but, uh, w- we have customers, uh, longstanding network operators- mm-hmm. ... who have in their electronic database information that was literally drawn 60 years ago. Jessica Denson (04:19):

Oh, wow. Ian Oliver (04:19):

Yeah. Jessica Denson (04:19):

So yeah, it needs to be updated. Mm-hmm. It needs to be in there. Yeah. Yep. So ... And does it surprise you? You said when we were talking before, right before we started, you deal mostly with tier two and tier three, is that right? Ian Oliver (04:31):

Indeed. Um, so I, my introduction to Globima was about three years ago, we were pursuing a cable company and I at that point had a company along with some partners which automated, well, it does automate the design of upgrades for cable networks. So basically the competition to everybody here at the Fiber Broadband Association- Uh-huh. ... so we shall no longer speak of cable networks here. <laugh> They'll take my badge, quiet place. Jessica Denson (04:57):

Oh gosh, I think I saw someone- Ian Oliver (04:59):

Yeah. ... Jessica Denson (04:59):

They're coming Ian Oliver (04:59):

For us. Yeah, the fiber police are after us. <laugh> Um, uh, Globima has been working with tier twos, well, actually more like tier seven operators started by self-made men in Eastern Europe because when the Eastern European countries came out from behind the wall- Jessica Denson (05:16):

Uh-huh. Ian Oliver (05:17):

... they went from 1940s and 50s technology to 1990s, but in, in like 10 years. Mm-hmm. Um, they actually skipped a lot of what we experienced in North America in terms of cable television technology, although there is some of that out there. They went more quickly to wireless, um, communications because it was quick to deploy and then fiber. Oh. So where we're all talking about fiber, well, we've been talking about fiber over here forever- mm-hmm. ... but it's really become a thing in the last four or five years. And obvious- obviously as this show has grown and the FBA- Uh-huh. ... has, has become the force that it is fiber in Europe and even in Eastern Europe, especially in Eastern Europe, it's like, "Yeah, we've been doing this for 14 years." Jessica Denson (06:03):

It's old school, a little bit old hat. Yeah. They've done it. They've experienced it. Ian Oliver (06:06):

Well, and they Jessica Denson (06:07):

Just- And they know the good and the bad Ian Oliver (06:08):

And the ugly, yeah. They grabbed it because it's what they had- Jessica Denson (06:10):

Uh-huh. Ian Oliver (06:11):

... and they could deploy it and why deploy an old technology when you have a new technology- Yeah. ... when you already have nothing. So it's like, it's not like we sunk cost into copper. We just don't, we had nothing so we're gonna go with fiber. Jessica Denson (06:22):

So a lot of ... So what you're saying, like in, in North America, many things that are happening is that old technologies having to be redug up and replaced- Yeah. ... or, um, whereas they just, it, that's, that's what was down, that was what was laid down when it- Yeah. ... when was Ian Oliver (06:36):

Needed. They just started with it. Jessica Denson (06:38):

So they have unique experience in that they have decades of- Yep. ... expertise in that area and what works and what doesn't work. Ian Oliver (06:45):

Indeed. Jessica Denson (06:46):

Yeah. Ian Oliver (06:46):

And, and so Globeema's product suites, which I find interesting, uh, they've, they've been battle tested. Mm-hmm. And as I'm sure you can understand, Eastern European entrepreneurial self-made men are the most patient and thoughtful people in the world. <laugh> And when they want something, it's like, no problem. Six weeks is great. And it's more like, I want it right now. Mm-hmm. So, uh, the products that I am now getting to know or have been getting to know over the last couple of years in working with Globima are, are really well featured and, and, but they reflect like absolute field testing, battle hardened, good software engineering in response to customer problems, results. Mm-hmm. So it's, it's a lot of fun. My background is network engineering and implementation, not software. Jessica Denson (07:29):

Right. Ian Oliver (07:30):

One of the dumbest things I ever did was start a software company. <laugh> But the, the smartest thing I did was sell it. <laugh> Jessica Denson (07:36):

Yeah. And which is, you sold, uh, it was called Versant, uh, Versant. Ian Oliver (07:40):

Versant Solutions Group. Uh-huh. No, it's funny because, um, we have French in Canada, so it'd be Versant. Jessica Denson (07:45):

So we- Which Jessica Denson (07:47):

Sounds fancier. Yeah. Ian Oliver (07:48):

Well, I find that our American customers call it Versant. <laugh> It's like, why are you speaking French? <laugh> What Jessica Denson (07:54):

Does the word mean in French, do you know? Ian Oliver (07:56):

I have no idea. <laugh> Jessica Denson (07:57):

That was, uh, two years ago, February. Jessica Denson (08:08):

How, was that a, was that like, uh, relief or you know what I mean? Like, or is it like losing your baby a litle bit like- Ian Oliver (08:14):

An old- ... That Jessica Denson (08:15):

Mm-hmm. Ian Oliver (08:19):

... when I phoned him and told him we got it sold, he said, "Okay." And he said, "And how's, how's your wife?" And I said, "Well, she never stopped loving me. " <laugh> But she likes me a lot better now. <laugh> Jessica Denson (08:34):

Yeah. Yeah. Ian Oliver (08:35):

I can imagine. Jessica Denson (08:36):

Yeah, Ian Oliver (08:36):

Stress of running a company has to be difficult as Ian Oliver (08:39):

Well- It is. And we bootstrapped it right from the beginning. Uh, we, we had no pockets. This was all just blood, sweat, and tears. Jessica Denson (08:48):

Yeah, just because you loved the industry. Ian Oliver (08:50):

No. <laugh> <laugh> No, it's because I was- Sorry, you tell me then. I was too stupid to realize starting a software company when you're not a software writer is like the wrong thing to do. The Jessica Denson (08:59):

Wrong thing to do. Ian Oliver (08:59):

Yeah, it's, yeah. But Jessica Denson (09:01):

Globema brought, bought it, correct? Ian Oliver (09:03):

Yes, they did. Jessica Denson (09:04):

Uh-huh. Yeah. Ian Oliver (09:04):

Did something right. Ian Oliver (09:06):

Um, some of us did, yes. Yeah. My, the smartest thing I did was sell it to Globema. <laugh> But no, we, the code is incredible. What- Uh-huh. ... what that tool does again for the Darth Vader competitors to this industry is, uh, it's actually giving our customers a chance ... <laugh> We're all gonna get killed for this. It, it gives the cable guys a chance to do their upgrades more cost effectively- Jessica Denson (09:27):

Uh-huh. Ian Oliver (09:28):

... and stay in the game. Jessica Denson (09:29):

Gotcha. Ian Oliver (09:30):

Gotcha. Jessica Denson (09:31):

Well, they've gotta do something because the game's leaving them behind at the moment, right? It, Ian Oliver (09:35):

It is. Jessica Denson (09:36):

Mm-hmm. Ian Oliver (09:37):

And for, for, well, for decades, the, the laws of physics favored the cable operators over the telephone companies. Yeah. Like it's just math and you couldn't, you could s- market it any way you wanted, but there was no way for the cable companies to keep up. So, or sorry, uh, the telephone companies, um, what we're seeing in Canada is that Bell and Telus and others are just going wholesale and deploying fiber to the home, but it's costing them a lot of money. Yeah. And, you know, they're re- they're reconfiguring their asset portfolio to fund that deployment of fiber and they have to. Mm-hmm. They just, they have no choice. Um, and what, by, by the virtue of that deployment of fiber into the residential neighborhoods right beside the cable drop coming into the house, they're giving the cable companies the run for the money that the cable companies have.

How Canada is handling it right now? Ian Oliver (10:33):

Yeah, it's happening down here too in the US. Yeah. Jessica Denson (10:36):

So is it ... For the US, I imagine it's, there's a mix more so, yes? Ian Oliver (10:41):

Um, in terms of cable versus fiber? Uh-huh. It, it is. Although the interesting thing is, um, when the cable op- so there's a thing in telecommunications. Mm-hmm. It's either greenfield, there's nothing. Mm-hmm. So it's a new subdivision, um, or it's brownfield where there is network. And those terms come from real estate development where, you know, brownfield's an old factory site- Uh-huh. ... and, and you gotta get rid of the old buildings to build the new ones. And greenfield is like, we're just gonna plow down the corn and start building houses. So, um, every telecommunications network operator when doing any significant network footprint growth is deploying fiber. Jessica Denson (11:20):

Wow. Ian Oliver (11:21):

The cable guys are deploying fiber. Jessica Denson (11:22):

Uh-huh. Everybody. Ian Oliver (11:24):

Yeah. Yeah. Now, they're not overbuilding themselves where they have their legacy plant now, although some of them are starting to talk about it. Mm-hmm. Like, they're saying, "Well, I think we need to be ready to just say where, where our copper wires run down the street and we drop copper wires into the houses, we're gonna start running fiber down beside those copper wires and fiber drops into those houses and then we'll take out all the copper." It's, it, it's been in conversation now for a little while. Jessica Denson (11:52):

Mm-hmm. So is, is copper just not even a, uh, have a future? Ian Oliver (11:58):

Um, mathematically, yes, it does. Mm-hmm. Um, what the cable industry has done, Cable Labs is a, the engineering s- uh, there's a couple of different things going on. The cable companies in North America own an entity called Cable Labs, which develops standards for new technology and protocols and it also does testing of those technologies and, um, the whole data over cable thing came out of cable labs and the latest standard of that, so data over cable signal interface system, Doxys, I think that's what it stands for. Doxys. So Doxis 4.0 is coming out right now. It's an incredibly sophisticated technology, very, very powerful, and it will make the legacy cable network infrastructure competitive with fiber. Jessica Denson (12:52):

Wow. That's interesting. I've not, I've not heard word or talk of that yet. It's called Docs. 4- Ian Oliver (12:58):

DO, D-O-C-S-I-S 4.0. Jessica Denson (13:02):

S- yes, 4.0. Ian Oliver (13:04):

Yep. Jessica Denson (13:04):

Interesting. And so when you say legacy cable, are you talking like Cox cable, those kinds of groups? Ian Oliver (13:09):

Yeah. Yeah. The, the technical term is hybrid fiber coax network. Mm-hmm. So they run fiber to a certain distance from the head end into the neighborhood and then serve around 250 homes, give or take, with copper. Oh. And what Doxys does is it makes that pocket of copper for 250 homes perform pretty close to fiber. Jessica Denson (13:33):

Gotcha. So then it's, it's less expensive. Ian Oliver (13:36):

It's less expensive to the cable operators to upgrade their cable network than to replace it all with fiber. Jessica Denson (13:42):

Gotcha. Makes sense. Ian Oliver (13:43):

Yeah. That's, that's the fundamental thing. Jessica Denson (13:45):

Yeah, that's interesting. Yeah. So let's go back to Blob- Globima. Sure. <laugh> Um, wh- what are you guys excited about right now? What are you, what are you up to right now that, um, you came on board- Ian Oliver (13:56):

Yep. Jessica Denson (13:56):

... uh, after selling it, is it just you just really believe in what they're doing? Ian Oliver (14:00):

I needed a job. <laugh> Jessica Denson (14:01):

Yeah. <laugh> I love the honesty of this Ian Oliver (14:05):

Interview. I sold the company. Bad news, honey, I'm unemployed. Yeah.

<laugh> So, um, no, in all seriousness, I, uh, in, in working with Globima on a joint pursuit, which then led to the purchase and sale conversation, I realized that, um, if Globima had been in North America when, you know, instead of in Poland, they were in North America 25 years ago- mm-hmm. ... they'd own a big chunk of this business here in North America. The, and, and over the most of my career, I've been designing and building networks and managing deployments. So all of the stuff that depends on that network design and that digital model I've been wrestling with as most of all of my, well, all of my peers have been over the years. So the technology that Globima's built as software capability is really critical to designing and building and operating networks. Oh. And I could just see it. I could see the quality of the product and indeed there's one, uh, one of Globema's products, the one that serves the self-made men.

We've got 350 customers in Europe, over 1,600 users. It's been out there for about 15 years and it just gets better and better. And honestly, it's cheapest chips. It's ridiculously inexpensive and it's, it's wildly well featured and that's just my personal perspective. And I know enough about software to know that's a result of years and years of development and testing and proving. It's not an overnight success, not at all. So that's, uh, something that we're showing here and the latest addition to that is the ability to automate the design of the fiber network, which is something that, well, there's probably a half a dozen significant players in the North American industry, um, who are competitors to Globema in a number of ways and who have a fiber network design automation capability of some kind. Um, the thing that is distinctive about what I see in Globeema's offerings is again, it's ridiculously cost effective and it's very well featured and it fits into the existing workflow in a very natural way.

So it, it's actually some tools, you know, they, they look great, you use them and then you, they end up screwing up your entire workflow- mm-hmm. ... and you spend all this time and money trying to do something differently and you wreck the rest of the process. This fits right in. And it's, and as I said, it's very cost-effective, which for smaller operators- mm-hmm.

So, um, what about AI? What is, what, how does Globema approach AI? How, how is it, um, advising its customers to do so? Is it working in part of that process, the software that you're talking about? Ian Oliver (16:51):

Well, interestingly, the automation process, uh, that, that I was just describing, it doesn't specifically require an AI approach. Jessica Denson (17:00):

Mm-hmm. Ian Oliver (17:01):

Um, because the engineering process is very well defined. Mm-hmm. And there are humans in the loop and they're going to drive the process by setting the rules and then the, the math will do the math. On a broader front though, uh, Globima utilizes and has for years, uh, machine learning, uh, AI technologies to do a number of things that, another ... So when you sell a product that holds a set of data, the customer always says, "Great, now get all my existing data into the product." <laugh> Jessica Denson (17:34):

Oh yeah. <laugh> Ian Oliver (17:35):

And this is where the pickup truck and the drawings and the cigarette case- Uh-huh. ... and the, you know, crayon drawings and photographs of whiteboards come in. Um, I'm exaggerating, but not much. <laugh> So we have a very serious practice in taking data sets and sorting them against each other so there's no duplicates, figuring out which is the correct entry or creating the correct, correct entry, which is called cleansing, and then delivering that clean, reliable, as good as it can possibly be dataset so that our customers, the operators can then use that data with confidence. So in that context, um, GenAI can play a good role. Jessica Denson (18:15):

Mm-hmm. Ian Oliver (18:16):

Um, GenAI is particularly suited to working with well-structured data sets. So one of the big things is while we've got a list of addresses in our customer service, um management platform, CRM, we've got lists of addresses that we know we have cables running to, then we've got lists of addresses that are here for reporting purposes and they're all completely different. Like, there's, there's enough different ... Even in, you know, how's the street name spelled? Uh-huh. Or, or is it ST or Street? So GenAI is very good at taking those kinds of things and sorting them and cl- and call, it's called data, um, address deduping and cleansing. Jessica Denson (18:57):

Mm-hmm. Which I can imagine is the, uh, a way to make things very efficient. Ian Oliver (19:03):

It helps. Yeah. Yeah. It, it does a lot. Yeah. Jessica Denson (19:05):

So you've been at the booth since I saw you this morning. Yep. Uh, what are people asking you? What are the, are they bringing similar problems or issues or what are you hearing from those on the floor? Ian Oliver (19:15):

Um, there are, there, there's a, a, there's a constant, um, interest in accelerating the process to get to design approval and funding. So that's usually involving what's called a high level design. So think of it as, as it's, it's the, it's more than a sketch, but it's not something you could give to a contractor to build. Mm-hmm. But it's enough to do your cost estimates and to be able to say, "We're gonna service these houses, this is what it's gona cost, this is this, the basic architecture and this is, this is the equipment we're gonna have to buy." And it should, you know, given all of those dimensions, it should take about four months to build it or whatever. But the real thing is to say, "Well, that high level design is useful. I've made a management decision, but I really don't wanna spend four months drawing the network in detail." Yeah.

"I'd like that to be done in four minutes." So that's what we do. We, we, we take that detailed design process and accelerate it, um, pretty substantially. Jessica Denson (20:19):

Yeah. And I can imagine some people are pretty excited about that. <laugh> Make Ian Oliver (20:23):

It easier. Yeah. It takes a little while to sink in. Yeah. So the, the, if you talk to any network design person about design automation, they'll say, "So is it a high level design or a low level design?" And so I'll say, "Well, we go to this point, that's pretty low level." Well, what if it's not exactly what you want? Well, then you just change it a litle bit. Mm-hmm. Like you would in the normal engineering process, you realize that you can't go down one side of the street, you go down the other. We'll just edit it right on the map. It's what, it's what this package does. Jessica Denson (20:53):

That's awesome. Yeah, Ian Oliver (20:54):

It's pretty cool. Jessica Denson (20:54):

Yeah. So what would you hope that people take away from our conversation today? Ian Oliver (21:00):

Um, well, at, I, I'd like to say this, the technologies that are available in terms of software development, compute power and storage and now layer in what everybody calls AI today, which is really Gen AI, but- Uh-huh. ... even before that machine learning, um, and, uh, and the like. I mean, there's, there's a whole lot of AI technologies, but GenAI is the latest. So anyway, there's no reason why smaller operators cannot run their shops as with, with the kind of sophisticated technology that was only available to the bigger operators. Mm-hmm. And I'm not talking about just Globemus products, but there's a whole host of folks out there making really good software applications at price points and with feature sets that are really good for smaller operators. So for me, it's, it's just fun to see that- Jessica Denson (21:58):

Mm-hmm. Ian Oliver (21:58):

... because the big guys have gotten so big. Jessica Denson (22:00):

They have gotten so big. Yeah. And it is great to see the smaller ISPs do well or to- Yeah. Ian Oliver (22:05):

... Jessica Denson (22:05):

To serve their area. I've talked to everybody from a rancher and it's like, uh, we needed service, so I just started an ISP. Ian Oliver (22:12):

PharmaLogic. <laugh> Jessica Denson (22:13):

Yeah. <laugh> Yeah, they just do it- Yeah. ... to, uh, you know, people that were like, "I wanted to keep my, I want my kid to stay here." So- Yeah. ... I worked for the broadband office and we were like, "We needed broadband here." And- Yeah. ... they formed an ISP. So yeah. It, it Ian Oliver (22:26):

Really is exciting. I, I had a chance to sit in a, a user conference for, uh, another vendor of, uh, essentially a, a customer relationship management system, CRM system targeted at tier twos and threes. And I was a guest in terms of, you know, I, I'm not bringing much value, but I got to listen in. Okay. And at the end of the three or four days of listening to these folks who are running and building those smaller, uh, operations, it's like, yeah, this is where the fun is. Yeah. The big guys are great, but, you know, it's like dancing with an elephant. Uh-huh. They make one wrong move and you're like paced. <laugh> Yeah. So- Jessica Denson (23:06):

That's true. Ian Oliver (23:06):

But with the smaller operators, it's like, "Yeah, let's try it. Let's do it. " Jessica Denson (23:10):

Yeah, they, they definitely, there is definitely a can- do spirit. Yeah. And also, uh, one of the things I love about some of the smaller ones is that they're in their communities. They live there- Totally. So they're, they're like, "Yeah, my grandma called me and she's mad that I should ask." <laugh> Yeah. Like, oh, my friend down the, my neighbor down the street's like, you need to fix, get my internet up. And it's a different ballgame, but it's interesting. Yeah. Now, some of them are bigger than just the small mom and pops, but Ian Oliver (23:34):
